Panther Women Win Third Straight

STAUNTON, Va. -- Senior Ali Davenport and junior Miranda Carrasco scored 19 points each to lead Ferrum College to a 71-57 USA South women's basketball win over Mary Baldwin College Jan. 8 on the road.

Official Box Score:  Ferrum 71, Mary Baldwin 57

Davenport went 8-11 from the floor and 3-3 from the line in 21 minutes of play.  Carrasco went 8-12, including 3-5 from behind the three-point arc, in 29 minutes.  Freshman Brittney Bullock added 14 points.

Ferrum (3-5, 1-0 USA South) jumped out to a 17-10 lead early and led 32-17 at halftime.  The Panthers' lead reach 22 points when a jumper by Davenport at the 14:48 mark put Ferrum up 49-27.  Ferrum shot 48 percent from the floor compared to Mary Baldwin's 37 percent.  Ferrum out-rebounded the Squirrels 40-38

Mary Baldwin (3-6, 0-1), playing just seven players, was led  by four in double figures.  Christie Hamilton had 15 points, Jennifer Barnes had 14 points and 13 rebounds, Iisesha Ricks had 11 points, and Jessica Carter had 10 points.

The win was Ferrum's third straight after opening the season at 0-5.  Coach Bryan Harvey's team is the defending USA South regular season champion, having won the title with a 12-2 league record in 2006-07.  The Panthers finished 21-7 overall last season, the school's best-ever record, and advanced to the title game of the 2007 USA South Tournament for the second straight season.

Ferrum returns to action Saturday Jan. 12 at home against USA South newcomer Meredith College, which joined the league just this year.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in Swartz Gym.  Ferrum then host Averett University Jan. 16 in a USA South doubleheader.  That game is slated to tip off at  5:30 p.m. and will be followed immediately by the Ferrum-Averett men's game.
