Panthers Sweep CNU in USA South Hoop Doubleheader

FERRUM, Va. -- The Ferrum College men's and women's basketball teams picked up a USA South Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep this afternoon with a pair of wins over Christopher Newport University.

The doubleheader sweep was the first over Christopher Newport since February 11, 1995.  Ferrum's women posted a 73-59 win that day over CNU in Ferrum under Head Coach Donna Doonan, while the men followed with a 60-57 win over the Captains under Head Coach Bill Pullen.

The women opened with a 69-54 win, and the men followed with a 94-83 win in the nightcap.  The win put the FC women in first place in the USA South standings by a half game over Christopher Newport.

Senior Ali Davenport and freshman Brittney Bullock led the way for the Ferrum women with 13 points each.  Davenport added six rebounds and three steals, and was 5-6 from the free-throw line.  Junior Miranda Carrasco had 10 points and four assists, freshman Kierra Parker had nine points, and sophomore Tonya Wright had eight points and five rebounds.

Ferrum (8-6, 5-1 USA South)  led 35-32 at halftime and out-rebounded the Captains 35-30.  Ferrum shot just under 48% from the floor in the second half, while holding the Captains to 29% in the second half.

Christopher Newport (10-3, 5-1) was led by Chelsie Schweers, who was 9-14 from the floor for 20 points.  Colandra Rollins had 12 points and Jessica Moore had 10 points.

In the men's game, Ferrum overcame a 47-40 halftime deficit by outscoring CNU 54-36 in the second half.  Sophomore Keith Crump led all scorers with 26 points on 10-17 shooting. Crump was 4-6 from behind the three-point line, dished out three assists and had two steals.  It was Crump's fourth 20-point game in the past six outings.

Freshman Marcus Mayo had 17 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Derek Mitchell had 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Senior Jon Godsey had 14 points and five boards and Jerrell Wade had 12 points and four assists.

Ferrum (9-8, 3-1) out-rebounded the Captains 41-33, after pulling down just 16 rebounds in the second half.  Godsey's layup put Ferrum on top for good at 67-66 with 8:06 left to play in the second half .

CNU (4-12, 0-3) got 20 points and 14 assists from Davon Barton, and 19 points from Conley Taylor.  Michael Green had 17 points, while Thomas Whinnett had 11 points and nine rebounds. 

Ferrum returns to action Sunday Jan. 27 with another USA South doubleheader against  Shenandoah University.  The women's games tip off at 2 p.m. and will be followed immediately by the men's game.
