Ferrum's Brantley, James & Paine Named National Scholar-Athletes

FERRUM, Va. - Three Ferrum College men's tennis players have been named National Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the 2005-06 school year.

2006 ITA National Scholar-Athlete Team

The I.T.A. selects a group of student-athletes each season for the National Scholar-Athlete program, based upon excellence in academics and on the tennis courts.  In Division III men's tennis this year, 209 players were named to the team.

Ferrum's three recipients this year include graduates Matt Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County) and Thomas James (Lawrenceville, G./Collins Hill), and rising senior Wilson Paine (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville).  All three players are repeat award winners, having earned the same honor at the conclusion of the 2004-065 season.

Brantley graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in history & social studies (double major) and a political science minor. He is the son of Crystal and Tommy Brantley of Norlina, North Carolina, and a 2002 graduate of Warren County High School.  Brantley earned numerous honors both on and off the court.  He is Ferrum's all-time wins leader with 177 career victories.

James also graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a religion & math double minor. He is the son of Patty & Steve James of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and a 2002 graduate of Collins Hill High School.

Paine is a rising senior history major and political science & religion double minor.  He is the son of Lisa and Tom Paine of Maryville, Tennessee, and a 2003 graduate of Maryville High School.  Paine holds a pair of school records, including singles win streak (15 matches).

The College will hold a ceremony to honor the three players during halftime of Ferrum's home football game on November 4th.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum College Sports Information Office at (540) 365-4306 or gholden@ferrum.edu.
