Ferrum's Brantley, James & Paine Named
National Scholar-Athletes
FERRUM, Va. - Three Ferrum
College men's tennis players have been named National
Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
for the 2005-06 school year.
2006 ITA National Scholar-Athlete Team
The I.T.A. selects a group of student-athletes each season
for the National Scholar-Athlete program, based upon
excellence in academics and on the tennis courts. In
Division III men's tennis this year, 209 players were
named to the team.
Ferrum's three recipients this year include graduates
Matt
Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County) and
Thomas
James (Lawrenceville, G./Collins Hill), and rising
senior
Wilson Paine (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville). All
three players are repeat award winners, having earned the
same honor at the conclusion of the 2004-065 season.
Brantley graduated in May with a bachelor’s
degree in history & social studies (double major) and a
political science minor. He is the son of Crystal and
Tommy Brantley of Norlina, North Carolina, and a 2002
graduate of Warren County High School. Brantley
earned numerous honors both on and off the court. He
is Ferrum's all-time wins leader with 177 career
victories.
James also graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in
psychology and a religion & math double minor. He is the
son of Patty & Steve James of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and
a 2002 graduate of Collins Hill High School.
Paine is a rising senior history major and political
science & religion double minor. He is the son of
Lisa and Tom Paine of Maryville, Tennessee, and a 2003
graduate of Maryville High School. Paine holds a
pair of school records, including singles win streak (15
matches).
The College will hold a ceremony to honor the three
players during halftime of Ferrum's home football game on
November 4th.
