Ferrum's Paine Earns
Men's Tennis Player of the Week
FERRUM, Va. - Ferrum College senior
Wilson Paine
(Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) has been named Men's Tennis Player
of the Week by the USA South Athletic Conference after having posted
a perfect 6-0 record last week.
Paine went 3-0 at #2 singles and 3-0 at #2 doubles, racking up wins
against Lynchburg College March 27, Southern Virginia University
March 28, and Eastern Mennonite University March 30. He helped
the Panthers improve to 4-13 overall with wins against each team.
Paine opened the week with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lynchburg's David O'Brien,
and teamed with freshman
Brian Cassidy (Purcellville, Va./Park
View) for an 8-1 win over Kristian Richardson and Jay Duimstra.
Against Southern Virginia, Paine defeated Adam Cubbage 10-1 in
singles, while he and Cassidy beat Joshua Hall and Brandon Flood 8-3
in doubles. Paine then beat Eastern Mennonite's Nathan
Derstine 6-4, 6-1 in singles and paired with Cassidy for an 8-3 win
over Ben Ruth and David Bryan in doubles.
Also nominated for Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors this week
was David Sutton of Greensboro College. This is Paine's first
honor this season. Ferrum returns to action Saturday, April 7,
hosting Maryville College at 11 a.m. in a non-conference match.
