Ferrum Defeats Guilford 11-1 in Baseball

FERRUM, Va. - Senior third baseman Brett Thomas (Danville, Va./George Washington) clubbed a two-run home run  in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Ferrum to an 11-1 non-conference baseball win this afternoon at home over Guilford College.

Senior OF Brent Sowers (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) got things started in the bottom of the first inning when he singled, stole second, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch.

Guilford scored its lone run in the second inning when 3B Zack
Schlesinger singled, advanced on a walk and a hit batter, the scored on a fielder's choice by OF Ben Bizier.

Ferrum picked up three more runs in the third inning, four in the fourth and three more in the sixth.  In 76 at-bats this season, Thomas is batting .408 with three doubles, three triples, six homers and 28 RBI.

Sowers went 4-4 with four runs, three stolen bases and an RBI.  Sowers' three stolen bases ties the single game school record.  Thus far, he has been successful on 18-of-20 stolen base attempts this season and leads the team with a .422 batting average.

Senior DH Ben Walton (Amherst, Va./Holy Cross) went 3-5 with three RBI, two runs, and a stolen base.  Walton just missed hitting for the cycle in yesterday's 10-1 road win over Bridgewater, going 3-5 with a double, a triple, a home run, three RBI and three runs.

Senior Jimmy Holm (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) pitched seven innings for this win this afternoon.  Holm allowed three hits and one earned run, struck out three and walked two.

Guilford (5-11) was led offensively by SS Drew Ward, who went 2-4.  Starting pitched Jared Via absorbed the loss for the Quakers.  He allowed nine hits and eight runs, all earned, over four innings and walked three of the 17 batters he faced.
