Women's Tennis Tops
Wilson 9-0
FERRUM, Va. - The Ferrum College women's tennis team picked up its
second win in as many many matches with a 9-0 rout of Wilson College
this afternoon at home.
Junior Tabitha Brown (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) was a 6-1,
6-1 winner at #1 singles over Sam May. Junior Katie Porter
(Marshall, Va./Notre Dame Academy) battled through a tight
three-set match, emerging with the 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Nikki
Smith at #2 singles.
Junior Dayna Jacobsen (Apex, N.C./Apex) also pulled out a
three-set win, earning a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-6 win over Mary Miller at
#3 singles. Senior Leah Austin (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin
County) won 6-2, 6-1 over Ruth Gant at #4 singles.
Freshman Reniesha Diggs (Portsmouth, Va./Nansemond River) and
junior Crystal Akers (South Riding, Va./Paul VI)
each cruised to straight set wins at #5 and #6 singles.
Diggs beat Lindsay Smith 6-0, 6-1 at #5, while Akers won 6-0, 6-0
over Kim Crowell at #6.
In doubles, Brown and Jacobsen eked out a 9-8 win in the top spot
over May and Smith. The match went into a tiebreaker, which
the Ferrum duo won 10-8. Porter and Austin defeated Miller and
Gant 8-4 at #2 doubles, while Akers and Diggs won 8-2 over Smith and
Crowell at #3.
Ferrum (2-1) returns to action March 13 with a USA South Athletic
Conference match at home against Greensboro College at 3 p.m. For more information, please contact
