FERRUM, Va. - Sophomore outfielder
DJ Phillips
(Bedford, Va./Liberty) tripled to lead off the bottom of the
ninth inning, then scored off a wild pitch by Blake Rich to score
the winning run in Ferrum College's 7-6 USA South baseball win over
North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Phillips was 2-4 this afternoon with a pair of runs. Senior
outfielder Brent
Sowers (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) went 2-4 with a double, two
runs, and an RBI.
Freshman pitcher
Lincoln Garner (Ferrum, Va./Franklin County) pitched 7.1
innings, allowing eight hits, walking three and striking out five.
It was his second USA South win this season.
NC Wesleyan (14-8, 3-2 USA South) was led by Matt Smith and Mark
Wooten, who each went 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Wooten's hit
came off a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning. Wes
Means also homered for the Battling Bishops, a lead-off solo blast
to open the seventh inning.
Rich absorbed the loss for NC Wesleyan. He pitched eight
innings, allowing 10 hits, walking three and striking out four.
Ferrum (9-7, 4-1 USA South) and NC Wesleyan play again Sunday, March
11, at 2 p.m. in Ferrum.
