Davenport, Wright Earn Player of the Week Honors

FERRUM, Va.  --  Junior center Ali Davenport (Baton Rouge, La./Runnels) and freshman forward Tonya Wright (Bland, Va./Bland County) have been named USA South Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for their play in two games last week..

The duo helped Ferrum wrap up the USA South regular season title and the top seed in the 2007 USA South Tournament with an 80-59 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College Feb. 16 and a 68-56 win over Peace College Feb. 17.  Both games were played on the road.

Davenport averaged 17 points and nine rebounds in the two wins.  She scored a team-high 16 points in the win over N.C. Wesleyan on 8-of-9 (89%) shooting from the field.  Against Peace, she had 18 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs.  Also nominated for the award this week were J.D. Richardson of N.C. Wesleyan, Kristen Kozar of Averett University, Nikki Rowland of Christopher Newport University, and Cassie Womack of Shenandoah University.

Wright averaged 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in the two Panther wins last week.  She had eight points, six rebounds and an assist against N.C. Wesleyan, then recorded 15 points, seven rebounds, and a blocked shot against Peace.

Ferrum defeated N.C. Wesleyan 81-50 in the quarterfinals of the USA South Tournament Feb. 20 at home.  The top-seeded Panthers will face #4 Shenandoah in the semifinal round Friday at 2 p.m.  The semifinals and finals are being hosted at Christopher Newport.  Please visit the 2007 USA South Tournament web site for scores, live stats and webcasts.
