Panthers Take Two from Shenandoah in USA South Hoop

FERRUM, Va.  --  Ferrum College completed a rare home-and-away doubleheader sweep of Shenandoah University in men's and women's basketball this afternoon at home.  The women opened the day with a 60-52 win, while the men followed with a 68-52 win.

Ferrum also swept Shenandoah January 23 in Winchester, winning 91-80 in the women's game and 75-71 in the men's game.

In the women's game this afternoon, freshman forward Tonya Wright (Bland, Va./Bland County) had a game-high 20 points, 14 of which she scored after halftime.  Senior guard Quanita Bennett (Virginia Beach, Va./Coastal Christian) had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Ferrum (16-6, 9-2 USA South) finished strong in both halves to register the win.  Shenandoah led by five points with 2:42 remaining in the first half, only to see Ferrum finish on a 7-0 run to go up 29-27 at the break.

The Panthers led for much of the second half, but Shenandoah took a 48-47 lead with 5:56 remaining in the game on a free throw by Alexis Harbol.  Ferrum closed out the game from there with a 13-4 run.

Shenandoah (13-8, 6-5 USA South) was led in scoring and rebounding by Harbol, who had 13 points and eight boards.  Alicia Sanders had 11 points and sex rebounds.

In the men's game, Ferrum got 21 points, 15 rebounds and five assists from junior center Cedric Jones (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass).  Senior guard Rob Fuller (Timberlake, N.C./Person Co.) finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman guard Keith Crump (Richmond, Va./Varina) had eight points, going 8-8 from the line.

Ferrum (10-13, 4-6 USA South) led by as many as 15 points in the first half and held a 30-20 halftime edge.  The Panthers led by as many as 20 points in the second half and never looked back.

Shenandoah (7-14, 1-8 USA South) was led by Jeremiah Lawrence, who had 10 points and nine rebounds.  Kenny Robertson also had 10 points for the Hornets.  For the game, Shenandoah shot just under 31% from the floor, 13% from behind the arc, and 56% from the line.  Ferrum won the battle of the boards, 44-43.
