Former Ferrum Football Player Jim Grobe Headed to Orange Bowl
FERRUM, Va. -- Former Ferrum College football standout
Jim Grobe is headed to the 2006 FedEx Orange Bowl.
Grobe, Head Football Coach at Wake Forest University, led the Demon
Deacons to the 2006 Atlantic Coast Championship with last week's 9-6
win over #23 Georgia Tech. The win propelled Wake Forest into
the Orange Bowl, to be held Tuesday, January 2 in Miami, Florida.
On December 4, Grobe was named Region I Coach of the Year by the
American Football Coaches Association. Grobe is the first WFU
coach to lead Wake Forest to bowl games during the ACC era. He
earned the nod as this year's ACC Coach of the Year.
Grobe played football at Ferrum in 1971 and 1972. He earned
Ferrum's Big Green Award in 1972, the second such recipient.
The Ferrum College Football Big Green Award is given annually to a
senior Panther football player, who best demonstrates the qualities
of courage, hustle, and desire as a role model for his fellow
teammates. The award is in memory of the seven former Ferrum
football players and Coach Rick Tolley who perished in Marshall
University football team airline tragedy in November of 1970.
#14 Wake Forest (11-2) will face #6 Louisville (11-1) in the Orange
Bowl. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information
office at (540) 365-4306.
