Women Need OT to Get Past Roanoke

FERRUM, Va.  --  Ferrum College needed overtime to defeat Roanoke College 84-82 in non-conference women's basketball action at he Homer C. Bast Center in Salem, Virginia.

Senior guard Quanita Bennett (Virginia Beach, Va./Coastal Christian) had 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting to lead the Panthers to their second straight win.  Bennett was 3-of-7 behind the three-point line, pulled down five rebounds, made two steals and blocked a shot.

Also scoring in double figures was junior center Ali Davenport (Baton Rouge, La./Runnels), who had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Ferrum's well-balanced offense saw three players score nine points each; senior guard Shanita Bennett (Virginia Beach, Va./Coastal Christian), sophomore guard Caprice Laws (Covington, Va./Covington), and freshman forward Tonya Wright (Bland, Va./Bland County).  Senior forward Beth Gardner (Monterey, Va./Highland County) had eight points and senior guard Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) had eight seven points.

Caitlin Long led Roanoke (0-1) with 19 points in her career debut.  Ferrum shot 50% for the game, compared to Roanoke's 40%.  The Panthers held a 41-39 rebounding edge.  Roanoke led 3-30 at halftime, and the two teams deadlocked at 70-70.  Ferrum was 6-9 at the line in OT.

Ferrum (2-1) returns to action Nov. 25-26 at the Methodist College Thanksgiving Tournament in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  On Nov. 25, Coach Bryan Harvey's team will face Guilford College at 6 p.m.  The Panthers will then face Piedmont College Nov. 26 at 2 p.m.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
