Panthers Sweep Shenandoah in USA South Hoop Doubleheader

FERRUM, Va.  --  Ferrum College picked up a pair of USA South Athletic Conference basketball wins tonight on the road, defeating Shenandoah University 91-80 in the women's game and 75-71 in the men's.

In the women's game, Ferrum built a 25-10 lead at 11"34 of the first half and never looked back.  Freshman guard Ashley Norton (Martinsville, Va./Magna Vista) led Ferrum with 19 points, all in the second half.

Senior guard Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) barely missed a double-double, registering 14 points and nine rebounds.  Freshman guard Miranda Carrasco (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) had 13 points, senior guard Quanita Bennett (Virginia beach, Va./Coastal Christian) had 12 and junior center Ali Davenport (Baton Rouge, La./Runnels) had a 10 points and seven rebounds.

Ferrum (11-5, 4-1 USA South) led 44-33 at halftime.  Shenandoah (11-4, 4-1) got 18 points from Alicia Sanders, 12 from Stephanie Harrold and 10 from Alexis Hargbol.

In the men's game, the first half was a tight affair with five lead changes and neither team leading by more than six points.  Ferrum took a 37-33 lead into the locker room.

The second half was more of the same as neither team could build a substantial lead and there were another six lead changes.  Ferrum (8-10, 2-3) took their final lead at 4:45 on a three-point basket by freshman guard Robbie Price (Danville, Va./GW Danville) to give Ferrum a 64-61 lead.

Junior center Cedric Jones (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) led Ferrum with 20 points on  9-of-13 shooting from the floor.  Junior forward Jon Godsey (Gladys, Va./William Campbell) had his fifth double-double of the season with e 13-point, 11-rebound performance tonight.  Godsey was a force defensively as well, swatting three shots.

Shenandoah (7-9, 1-3) was led in scoring and rebound by Jeremiah Lawrence, who had 24 points and 10 boards. 
Mouktar Fawehinmi and Lenzie Adams had 16 points and 10 points, respectively, for the Hornets.

Ferrum's women return to action Saturday, Jan. 27, hosting USA South opponent Peace College at 2 p.m.  The Panthers will then host North Carolina Wesleyan College in another USA South doubleheader Sunday, Jan. 28.   The women tip off at 2 p.m., with the men to follow at 4 p.m.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
