Wright Nabs Third USA South Rookie of the Week
Honor
FERRUM, Va. -- For the second time in as many weeks and
the third time overall this season, Ferrum College's
Tonya Wright
(Bland, Va./Bland County) has been named USA South Athletic
Conference Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week.
The freshman forward helped Ferrum open USA South play with a pair
of wins last week over Averett University and Methodist University.
In an 80-56 win at Averett Jan. 10, Wright had 15 points and six
rebounds. Wright barely missed a double-double in Ferrum's
81-63 win at home over Methodist Jan. 13, registering eight points
and nine rebounds.
This is the third Rookie of the Week award for Wright, who
earned the honor Nov. 30 and Jan. 8. Through 13 games this season,
Wright is averaging 11.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
She is shooting 56% from the floor, 33% from behind the three-point
arc, and 73% from the line.
Also nominated for Rookie of the Week honors was Alexis Hargbol from
Shenandoah University. Shenandoah's Alicia Saunders was named
Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Jeremiah Lawrence of
Shenandoah and Trey Drake of North Carolina Wesleyan College earned
Men's Player of the Week and Men's Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Ferrum is 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the USA South in women's
basketball. Coach Bryan Harvey's team returns to action Jan. 16,
hosting a USA South doubleheader with Greensboro College. The
women's game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at
7:30 p.m.
The Pride are the reigning USA South women's basketball champions,
having won the league's post-season tournament and advanced to the
second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago. For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information
