Panthers Split Hoop Doubleheader with Averett

DANVILLE, Va.  --  Ferrum College opened USA South Athletic Conference basketball action tonight at Averett University, winning the women's game 80-56 and losing the men's game 77-69.

In the women's game, senior guard Quanita Bennett (Virginia beach, Va./Coastal Christian) led Ferrum with 17 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor.  Bennett was 5-6 from three-point range.

Freshman forward Tonya Wight (Bland, Va./Bland County) had 15 points and six rebounds.  Wright earlier in the week was named USA South Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, her second such honor this season.

Junior center Ali Davenport (Baton Rouge, La./Runnels) added 13 points and 13 rebounds, while senior guard Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Averett (0-8, 0-1 USA South) was led in scoring by Kristen Kozar, who had a game-high 20 points.  Taylor Poirier added 14 points and six rebounds for the Cougars.  Ferrum (8-4, 1-0)  led 39-21 at halftime.  The Panthers out-rebounded Averett 50-34.

Ferrum (6-8, 0-1) got a game-high 20 points from junior center Cedric Jones (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) in the men's game, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers lost their fourth straight.  Jones was 8-13 from the floor, 4-7 from the line and had nine rebounds. 

Senior guard Rob Fuller (Timberlake, N.C./Person) had 16 points, and junior forward Jon Godsey (Gladys, Va./William Campbell) had 13 points, 11 rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots.

Averett (10-3, 1-0) has been ranked as high as #11 in the nation by D3hoop.com.  The Cougars were led by Damien Brown's 15 points and seven rebounds.  Brandon Malone and Cory McDaniel had 13 and 12 points, respectively.  Averett led 30-24 at halftime and out-rebounded Ferrum 44-38.

Ferrum returns to action Saturday, Jan. 13, hosting Methodist University in another USA South doubleheader.  The women tip off at 2 p.m., with the men to follow at 4 p.m.  Averett will play a USA South doubleheader Saturday at Greensboro College.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
