Castillo Howlett Joins Ferrum Athletics Staff
Former Franklin County High School Coach Accepts Volleyball Post

FERRUM, VA – Director of Athletics Abe Naff has announced that Nancy Castillo Howlett has accepted Women's Volleyball Coach position at Ferrum College.

Howlett previously served as head coach at Franklin County High School from 1991-2003, leading the Eagles to a 178-90 record in 13 years at the helm of the program of the Eagle volleyball program.  She also served five years prior to that as Franklin County High School's ninth-grade and JV coach.

She led Franklin County to four Western Valley District titles (previously the Roanoke Valley District), and was named District Coach of the Year in 1993, 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2003.  The Roanoke Times named Howlett the Timesland Volleyball Coach of the Year in 1994 and 2003.  The Eagles qualified for the regionals 10 times, including in 2003, when Franklin County advanced to the state tournament.

Howlett received her bachelor's degree from Emory & Henry College in 1985, then earned her master's degree in education from Lynchburg College in 1992.  She prepped at Patrick Henry High School in Glade Spring, Virginia, where she was a four-year player for the Rebel volleyball team.

Howlett replaces Kelly Caputo, who resigned in June to pursue other opportunities.  Ferrum returns all 12 players from last year's 6-24 team.  The Panthers had one player make the 2004 USA South All-Conference team as an honorable mention, Mindy Altice, who played four years at Franklin County under Howlett.

Ferrum opens the 2005 volleyball season September 2-3 at the Emory & Henry Invitational.  For more information, please contact Ferrum College Sports Information Director Gary Holden at (540) 365-4306.
