USA South Football Poll Christopher Newport Grabs Top Billing FERRUM, VA – Ferrum College has been picked to finish fifth in the USA South Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll. In a vote of the league's head football coaches, Christopher Newport University has been picked to win the 2005 title, receiving six of the possible eight first-place votes and 48 total points. The Captains have earned a share of each of the first four league titles and have competed in four straight NCAA Division III playoffs. Shenandoah University, which received two first-place vote, tallied 44 points to finish second in the poll. Methodist College (31 pts), Averett University (30) and Ferrum (27) finished third through fifth, respectively. North Carolina Wesleyan College, Greensboro College (15), and Maryville College (10) round out the poll. Maryville is a football-only member playing its first season in the USA South. 2005 USA South Preseason Football Poll (first-place votes) 1. Christopher Newport (6) 48 pts 2. Shenandoah (2) 44 3. Maryville 10 Ferrum finished 4-6 overall and tied for sixth place in the league last season at 1-5 against USA South opponents. The Panthers open the 2005 September 3rd at home against non-conference opponent Guilford College. Ferrum plays its USA South opener September 24 against Shenandoah in Winchester, Virginia. Head Coach Dave Davis begins his 12th season as head coach at Ferrum. Davis is 55-51 in his first 11 seasons.
