Ferrum Athletes Named Academic All-State
 
FERRUM, Va. – Four Ferrum College student-athletes have been honored by the Virginia Sports Information Directors as Academic All-State selections.

2005-06 VaSID Academic All-State Team

Junior softball player Kim Cox (Gladys, Va./William Campbell) has been named to the Academic All-State third team.  Cox recently was named one of two recipients of the 2006 Don Scalf Award, an award given annually to the USA South Athletic Conference's top male and female student-athletes.

Cox was
the USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Year in 2004, and was second team All-Conference and second team All-State in 2005.  She helped Ferrum win the 2005 USA South Tournament (Tournament MVP) and advance to the NCAA Division III playoffs.  Cox is a three-time Academic All-Conference selection.  She is majoring in business with a double emphasis in marketing & management, and a minor in computer technology.

Joining Cox on the Academic All-State third team is senior men's tennis player Matt Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County).  Brantley was named to the 2006 VaSID Men's Tennis All-State Team as a second team selection.  He earned All-Conference second team honors the past two seasons and was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Scholar-Athlete in 2005.  He holds eight school records, including career overall wins.  Brantley
is a four-time Academic All-Conference selection.  He graduated in May 2006 with a double-major in history & social studies, and a political science minor.

Junior men's tennis player Wilson Paine (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) was also named to the Academic All-State third team.  Paine was also an ITA National Scholar-Athlete in 2005, and has made the Academic All-Conference team three straight years.  He holds two school records, including longest singles win streak, and is a
three-time Academic All-Conference selection.  Paine is majoring in history with a double-minor in political science & religion.

Rounding our Ferrum's Academic All-State selections is senior football standout Dustin Hamoy (Richlands, Va./Richlands), who has earned honorable mention.  Hamoy helped lead the Panthers to a share of the 2005 USA South Athletic Conference football title and a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.  He is a
four-time Academic All-Conference selection.  Hamoy graduated in May 2006 with a physical education major, sports medicine emphasis.
