IMMEDIATE RELEASE Panthers Improve to 24-8-1 FERRUM, Va. – Ferrum College earned a 7-5 win over Averett University in USA South Athletic Conference baseball action this afternoon at home. Official Box Score: Ferrum 7, Averett 5 The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead and tacked on an insurance run in the eighth for league win. The game's starting time was pushed back almost four hours due to rain. Sophomore second baseman Joshua Tuck (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) went 2-4 and crossed the plate twice for the Panthers. Junior outfielder Brent Sowers (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) went 2-5 with two RBI and scored a run. Junior Casey Davenport (Bedford, Va./Liberty) scattered eight hits over seven innings to raise his pitching record to 4-2 this season. Davenport struck out four batters and walked one. Junior Jimmy Holm (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) was credited with the save. He pitched two innings in relief, allowing one hit, striking out four, and walking none. Averett was led by outfielder T.J. Bray, who went 3-5 and scored two runs. Catcher Justin Brown went 2-4 with a double, an RBI and a run. Drake Shumate absorbed the loss for the Cougars. He pitched eight innings, allowing nine hits and walking four, while striking out two. Ferrum improves to 24-8-1 with the win, 9-7 in the USA South. Averett is now 12-24 overall, 2-14 in league play. The two teams will play a doubleheader Sunday in Ferrum, starting at 1 p.m. # # # |
