Tennis Teams Sweep Randolph-Macon
Seven Honored During Senior Day Ceremony


FERRUM, Va. – Ferrum College picked up a pair of non-conference wins over Randolph-Macon College this afternoon in men's and women's tennis action at home.  The women prevailed 9-0, while the men won 6-1.

     Women:  Ferrum 9, Randolph-Macon 0
     Men:  Ferrum 6, Randolph-Macon 1

Prior to the match, seven players were honored with a Senior Day ceremony.  Valerie Lord (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and Sarah Banda (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) were both honored from the women's team.

Lord was a winner at #1 singles against Randolph-Macon, while Banda won at #2 singles.  The two also teamed for a win at #1 doubles.  Ferrum accepted forfeit wins at #3-6 singles and also at #2-3 doubles.

The win improves Ferrum to 4-8 overall, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 4-8.  Ferrum plays next on Saturday, April 8, against Shenandoah University and the University of District of Columbia.  Both matches will be played at Shenandoah in Winchester, Virginia.

Men's tennis seniors Matt Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County), David Gartrell (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun Valley), Thomas James (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill), Paul Matthews (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker), and Erich Trier (Middleburg, Va./Loudoun Valley) were all honored during a pre-match ceremony as well.

Winning for the Panthers this afternoon in singles were freshman Mike Sampson (Wirtz, Va./Franklin County) at the #1 spot, and Brantley, Trier, James and Gartrell at #3-6.  Trier and sophomore Kevin Board (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) won at #2 doubles, while juniors Stephen Brown (West Point, Va./West Point) and Thomas Wehner (Bealeton, Va./Liberty) won at #3 doubles.

Ferrum improves to 9-5 with the win, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 4-9.  The Panthers play next on Thursday, April 6, at defending USA South Athletic Conference champion Methodist College.  Ferrum will then play alongside the Panther women in Winchester Saturday against Shenandoah and University of D.C.
