IMMEDIATE RELEASE USA South Honors FERRUM, Va. – The USA South Athletic Conference has named 2006 All-Conference teams for its six spring sports and Ferrum College was well-represented with 19 student-athletes and one coach earning honors. In baseball, senior Jesse Bowles (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) was named to the All-Conference first team at the utility position. Bowles is batting .291 with six doubles, 14 runs, and 23 RBI. He also has a 6-2 pitching record with a 2.25 ERA and 37 strikeouts. Junior 3B Brett Thomas (Danville, Va./George Washington) and junior C Nick Baker (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) have been named to the All-Conference second team. Thomas is batting .317 with 13 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 31 runs, and 35 RBI. Baker is batting .318 with five doubles, 15 runs, and 23 RBI. Senior OF John Sain (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring), junior OF Matt Gammon (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett-Yancey), junior P Curtis Taylor (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage), and RP Jimmy Holm (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) have all been named to the honorable mention team. Ferrum (25-9-1) will face #6 Shenandoah University Wednesday, April 12, at 4:30 p.m. in the first round of the USA South Baseball Tournament in Burlington, North Carolina. Coach Abe Naff's team will be the tournament's #3 seed. In softball, senior OF Trica Moore (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) and junior DP Katie Custis (Onancock, Va./Nandua) have been named to the All-Conference first team. Moore is batting .369 with six doubles, four triples, four home runs, 31 runs, and 27 RBI this season. She recently broke the college's career home run record, and now has 18 and counting. Custis is batting .310 with seven doubles, one homer, 15 runs, and 18 RBI. Sophomore Kathleen Gulino (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) has been named to the All-Conference second team. She is batting ..343 with three doubles, four triples, one home run, 24 runs, and 24 RBI. Senior 1B Kristina Wilhelm (Covington, Va./Alleghany), senior OF Jenny Perdue (Glade Hill, Va./Franklin County), and junior P Laura Terry (Willis Wharf, Va./Northampton) have all been named to the honorable mention team. Ferrum (19-17) will be the #3 seed in this week's USA South Tournament, to be played April 13-15 at Springwood Park in Burlington. Coach Vickie Van Kleeck's team will face #6 Shenandoah University in the first round of the tournament Thursday at 1 p.m. In men's tennis, seniors Paul Matthews (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) and Matt Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County) have been named to the All-Conference second team. Matthews played #1 singles and #1 doubles throughout the majority of the season, while Brantley played #3 singles and #2 doubles. Brantley is the first person in school history to record 100-plus career wins. Senior Erich Trier (Middleburg, Va./Loudoun Valley) and freshman Mike Sampson (Wirtz, Va./Franklin County) have earned spots on the honorable mention team. Coach Gary Holden has been named 2006 USA South Men's Tennis Coach of the Year. Holden has led the Panthers to an 11-6 overall record thus far. He also earned Coach of the Year honors in 2003. Ferrum will be the #4 seed in this week's USA South Tournament, facing #5 Greensboro College Thursday in the opening round at 1 p.m. in Burlington. In women's lacrosse, sophomore MF Stephanie Perih (Centreville, Va./Paul VI) and freshman MF Sarah Kaye (Annandale, Va./Paul VI) have been named to the All-Conference honorable mention team. Ferrum closed out its season at 3-9 under Head Coach Celia Mosier. The Panthers will not compete in this week's USA South Tournament. # # # |
