Panthers Take Two from Piedmont 9-1, 3-2 Ferrum, Va. – Ferrum College Baseball Coach Abe Naff earned his 600th career victory this afternoon as The Ferrum College baseball team defeated Piedmont College 9-1 and 3-2. Official Box Score: Ferrum 3, Piedmont 2 Game one was a continuation of Friday night's game that was postponed after four innings due to rain with the Panthers clinging to a 2-0 lead. Ferrum picked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth when senior Donnie Sprouse (Madison Hts., Va./Amherst Co.) doubled to knock in sophomore Josh Tuck (Richmond, Va./Hermitage). Sprouse scored on freshman Alex Stover's (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) single. The Panthers put the game out of reach with a five run seventh inning that included a home run by Sprouse. Junior Jimmy Holm (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) picked up the win by pitching all five innings today. He surrendered just one run on six hits while striking out four Lions. In today's regularly scheduled game, junior Ryan Cooper (Stuarts Draft, Va./Stuarts Draft) pitched a complete game allowing two runs on four hits to pick up the win. Ferrum picked up two runs in the bottom of the third when senior John Sain (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) singled in senior Travis Hundley (Ferrum, Va./Franklin County) and junior Matt Gammon (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett-Yancey). Piedmont scored once in the top of the fifth, but Ferrum answered as a Jesse Bowles (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) double scored Gammon. Piedmont scored once more in the top of ninth before Ferrum forced a double play to end the game. Naff is in his 22nd season as head coach of the Panthers and has an overall record of 600-214-3. His teams have made nine trips to the NCAA Playoffs and won eight league titles. With the pair of wins, Ferrum improves to 16-6-1 on the season while Piedmont falls to 12-10. The teams will meet one more time on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. # # # |
