
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Ferrum College men's tennis team beat Maryville College and Emory & Henry College this afternoon in non-conference action on the road. Both matches were played at Maryville College. Box Score: Ferrum 5, Maryville, 2 Box Score: Ferrum 5, Emory & Henry 1 Against Maryville, the Panthers won five of six singles matches and one doubles match, to score a 5-2 win. Freshman Mike Sampson (Wirtz, Va./Franklin County), seniors Matt Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County) and Erich Trier (Middleburg, Va./Loudoun Valley) won at #2-4 singles. Junior Wilson Paine (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) and Stephen Brown (West Point, Va./West Point) won at #5-6 singles. Brown and freshman Jordan Bakos (Richmond, Va./James River) won at #3 doubles. Against Emory & Henry, senior Paul Matthews (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker) started things off with a win at #1 singles and Sampson won at #2. Trier, Paine and Brown won at #4-6 singles. No doubles matches were played. The wins were Ferrum's 7th and 8th consecutive wins. The streak dates back to a March 8 win over King's College in Orlando, Florida. Ferrum (8-3, 2-0 USA South) plays next on Wednesday, March 29, at USA South Athletic Conference opponent Averett University in Danville, Virginia. The Panthers then entertain Christopher Newport University Saturday, April 1, in another USA South match. # # # |
