IMMEDIATE RELEASE Panthers Earn Player of the Week Awards FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Three Ferrum College softball players have been chosen Players of the Week by the USA South Athletic Conference. Junior Kim Cox (Gladys, Va./William Campbell) has been named USA South Softball Pitcher of the Week. Cox went 2-1 on the mound with a perfect 0.00 earned run average. In 19.2 innings of work, she surrendered nine hits, allowed two walks, and struck out 17 batters. Opponents batted just .129 against Cox last week. Cox also had a solid week offensively. She batted .375 with a double, five RBI and five runs. Also nominated for the award were Jennifer Sorensen of Methodist College, Stacie Patterson of Greensboro College, and Lauren Pleasant of Peace College. Junior Lindsay Etherton (Moneta, Va./Staunton River) was named USA South Softball Player of the Week. In six games last week, she batted .500 with three doubles and a home run, scored seven runs and had an impressive .833 slugging percentage. Also nominated for the award were Adrienne Acosta of Methodist College, Ashlee Bass of N.C. Wesleyan College, Lauren Manning of Greensboro, Andrea Rohde of Christopher Newport University, Jessica Bollinger of Shenandoah University and Melanie Gilbert of Averett University. Freshman Lauren Rizzo (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth's) has been named USA South Softball Rookie of the Week. Rizzo batted .333 last week with three home runs and six runs batted in. She scored eight runs and have a .762 slugging percentage over six games. Also nominated for the award were Kristen Templeton of Shenandoah, Katie Moyers of Christopher Newport, and Kayla Talbert of Methodist. Ferrum went 4-2 last week. The Panthers defeated the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 10-6 and 6-0 March 17. The Panthers then hosted the 2006 Ferrum Invitational at Moyer Sports Complex in Salem March 18-19. On the 18th, Ferrum fell 4-3 to Emory & Henry College and fell 10-8 to Ohio Valley College. Coach Vickie Van Kleeck's team rebounded on the 19th with a 10-0 win over Frostburg State University and a 10-0 win over the Merchant Marine Academy. Ferrum is now 10-8 overall and 1-1 in the USA South. The Panthers play next on Wednesday, March 22, when they host Virginia Wesleyan College at Moyer Sports Complex at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader. # # # |
