IMMEDIATE RELEASE Brantley Honored for Reaching 100 Wins FERRUM, Va. – The Ferrum College men's and women's tennis teams swept visiting North Carolina Wesleyan College this afternoon at home. The men posted a 7-0 shutout, while the women were 7-2 winners. Women's Box Score: Ferrum 7, NCW 2 Men's Box Score: Ferrum 7, NCW 0 Prior to the match, senior Matt Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County) was honored for being the first person in school history to reach the 100-win career mark. With his singles and doubles wins this afternoon, Brantley is now 59-25 in singles and 50-21 in doubles, for a 109-46 career overall mark. He is the first person in school history to achieve this career milestone. Winning for the Ferrum men this afternoon in singles were senior Paul Matthews (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker), freshman Mike Sampson (Wirtz, Va./Franklin County), Brantley, senior Erich Trier (Middleburg, Va./Loudoun Valley), and senior David Gartrell (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun Valley) at the #1-5 spots, respectively. Junior Stephen Brown (West Point, Va./West Point) accepted a forfeit at #6 singles. In doubles, Matthews and junior Wilson Paine (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) won at #1, Brantley and Trier won at #2, and Sampson and Brown accepted a forfeit at the #3. The win improves Ferrum to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the USA South Athletic Conference. In the women's match, senior Valerie Lord (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) won at #2 singles, sophomore Katie Porter (Marshall, Va./Notre Dame Academy) won at #3 singles, sophomore Tabitha Brown (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) won at #4 singles, sophomore Crystal Akers (South Riding, Va./Paul VI) on at #5 singles, and sophomore Dayna Jacobsen (Apex, N.C./Apex) won at #6 singles. Lord and Brown teamed for a win at #2 doubles, while Jacobsen and junior Leah Austin (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) won at #3 doubles. The win improved Ferrum to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the USA South. # # # |
