
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Panthers Sweep Singles & Doubles FERRUM, Va. – Ferrum College won its fifth consecutive men's tennis match this afternoon, shutting out Lynchburg College 7-0 at home. It was also the second consecutive win by shutout for the Panthers, who beat Greensboro College 7-0 March 15 on the road. Men's Box Score: Ferrum 7, Lynchburg 0 Ferrum opened with a sweep of the doubles matches. Seniors Erich Trier (Middleburg, Va./Loudoun Valley) and Matt Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County) defeated Brian Salmon and Dave O'Brien 8-4 at #2 doubles, while freshman Mike Sampson (Wirtz, Va./Franklin County) and junior Stephen Brown (West Point, Va./West Point) won 8-1 over Anthony D'Angelo and Jason Duimstra at #3 doubles. Senior Paul Matthews (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker) and junior Wilson Paine (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) won by default over LC's Bobby Lanza and Bill Cioffi. Matthews also won by forfeit at #1 singles. Sampson beat Cioffi 6-0, 6-3 at #2 singles, Brantley beat Salmon 6-3, 6-4 at #3, Trier beat O'Brien 6-3, 6-3 at #4, and Paine beat D'Angelo 6-2, 6-2 at #5. Brown needed three sets to get past Duimstra, winning 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) at #6 singles. Ferrum (5-3, 1-0 USA South) plays next March 19, with a USA South Athletic Conference match against North Carolina Wesleyan College. Coach Gary Holden's team will then travel to Danville, Virginia, March 21 to face USA South opponent Averett University. # # # |
