IMMEDIATE RELEASE Panthers Sweep Singles, Take 2 of 3 Doubles GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Ferrum College men's tennis team won its fourth straight match with a 7-0 win over Greensboro College. It was the first USA South athletic Conference match for the Panthers this season. The Ferrum women also competed against Greensboro this afternoon, falling 9-0 to the Pride. Men's Box Score: Ferrum 7, Greensboro 0 Women's Box Score: Greensboro 9, Ferrum 0 The Panthers began the day by sweeping the singles matches. Freshman Mike Sampson (Wirtz, Va./Franklin County) won 6-0, 6-4 at #1 singles, senior Paul Matthews (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker) won 6-2, 6-3 at #2, and senior Matt Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County) won 6-2, 6-0 at #3. Senior Erich Trier (Middleburg, Va./Loudoun Valley) won 6-2, 6-0 at #4 singles, junior Wilson Paine (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) won 6-1, 6-1 at #5, and junior Stephen Brown (West Point, Va./West Point) won 6-3, 6-0 at #6. Matthews & Paine were double winners, earning an 8-4 win at the #1 spot. Senior Thomas James (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) and freshman Jordan Bakos (Richmond, Va./James River) posted an 8-0 shutout at #3 doubles. Ferrum (4-3, 1-0 USA South) plays next on Friday, March 17, with a non-conference match against Lynchburg College and on Sunday, March 19, with a USA South match against North Carolina Wesleyan College. # # # |
