IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ferrum Wins Offensive Battle 12-11 FERRUM, Va. – Ferrum College rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up a non-conference baseball victory over visiting Roanoke College this afternoon. Box Score: Ferrum 12, Roanoke 11 Trailing 11-10 in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second and no outs, the Panthers picked up two runs when senior Jesse Bowles (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) bunted to advance the runners. Roanoke pitcher Justin Bradley attempted the force out at third base but threw the ball wide allowing senior John Sain (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) and junior Brett Thomas (Danville, Va./George Washington) to score on the play and give Ferrum the 12-11 lead. Sophomore Curtis Taylor (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) shut down the Roanoke offense over the final two and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit while striking out five as he picked up his third win of the season. Roanoke opened the game with four runs in the top of the first inning and added a fifth in the top of the second. Ferrum put up three in the bottom of the first and jumped out to a 10-5 lead after two innings with a seven run second inning. Junior Matt Gammon (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett-Yancey) and Thomas both hit home runs in the second. Gammon finished the day 3-6 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and a home run, while Thomas went 2-4, scored three times, hit a home run, and drove in three. Roanoke continued to chip away at the lead scoring twice in the fourth and fifth innings and eventually took the lead with two more runs in the top of the seventh before Ferrum battled back. With the win, Ferrum improves to 10-6 on the season and returns to action tomorrow afternoon at Bridgewater College. Roanoke drops to 8-7 with the loss. # # # |
