IMMEDIATE RELEASE Panther Men Fall to Methodist FERRUM, Va. – #3 Ferrum College defeated #6 Averett University 72-63 in a 2006 USA South Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game tonight at home. Women's Box Score: #3 Ferrum 72, #6 Averett 63 Junior Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) led all scorers with 23 points, including 15 in the second half, and had a game-high 14 rebounds. Junior Quanita Bennett (Virginia Beach, Va./Coastal Christian Academy) had 21 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor, including three of four shots from behind the arc. Senior Tawanna McCall (Bassett, Va./Bassett) had 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Cougars were led by CeCe Carter's 15 points and Samantha Powell's 10 points. Averett (11-18) closes out its season with the loss. With the win, the Panthers advance to the semifinals, to be held Friday, Feb. 24, in Newport News, Virginia. Christopher Newport University is serving as host for both the men's and women's semifinal and championship rounds. Ferrum play Friday at 8 p.m. in the semifinal round, facing #7 Shenandoah University. The Hornets upset #2 Christopher Newport 64-61 tonight in Newport News. The #6 seeded Ferrum men were not as fortunate, falling 68-56 tonight in the USA South Tournament quarterfinals at #3 Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Sophomore Cedric Jones (Lynchburg, Va./Gulf Coast CC) led the panthers with 16 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Trey Ray (Charleston, W.Va./Williams) has 13 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Rob Fuller (Timberlake, N.C./Person) had 10 points. Men's Box Score: #3 Methodist 68, #6 Ferrum 56 The Monarchs got 16 points from Seth Thomas, 13 points from Michael McEvoy, and 10 points from Travis McBryde. Methodist (10-16) advances to the semifinal round Friday at Newport News, where it will face #2 Averett. Ferrum (7-19) closed out its season with the loss. # # # |
