Replaces Scott Shepherd, Who Resigns to Pursue Other Interests

FERRUM, VA – Director of Athletics Abe Naff has named Bill Tharp as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Ferrum College.  Tharp replaces Scott Shepherd, who stepped down to enter private business.

Tharp came to Ferrum in the fall of 2001 as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach.  Prior to his arrival at Ferrum, Tharp was an officer with the United States Army for five years, and was stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia.  While in the Army, he served as an Assistant Boys Basketball Coach for three seasons at Liberty County High School in Hinesville, Georgia.

A 1996 West Point graduate, Tharp played basketball for Army from 1992-94, then served as a Student Assistant Coach from 1994-96.  He earned his Master's degree in education from the University of Missouri in the spring of 2005.

Ferrum closed out the 2004-05 season at 7-19 overall, 4-8 in the USA South Athletic Conference.  Tharp inherits a team that featured six freshmen, four sophomores and one junior this past year.
