Men's Tennis Defeats Greensboro 6-1
FERRUM, VA -- The Ferrum College men's
tennis team stopped a four-match losing streak this afternoon at
home with a 6-1 USA South Athletic Conference win over visiting
Greensboro College.

The Panthers got a pair of doubles wins at the #1 and #3 spots to
take a 1-0 lead into the singles portion of the match.
Juniors Matt
Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County) and
Paul Matthews
(Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) picked up an 8-2 win at #1
doubles, while juniors
David Gartrell
(Hamilton, Va./Loudoun Valley) and
Thomas James
(Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) won 8-2 at #3 doubles.
Matthews won 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at #2 singles, and junior
Erich Trier
(Middleburg, Va./Loudoun Valley) won 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at #3
singles. Sophomore
Wilson Paine
(Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) won 6-1, 6-1 at #4 singles,
followed by Gartrell's 6-3, 6-4 win at #5, and James' 6-0, 6-3 win
at #6.
Greensboro (1-10, 1-3 USA South) got it's lone singles win from
P.G. Grane at #1 singles. The duo of Mark Dirou and Carlo
Gonzalos also won 8-5 at #2 doubles for the Pride. Ferrum
(6-6, 2-3) returns to action Sunday, April 10, with a home match
against Shenandoah University.
In the women's match, Greensboro downed Ferrum 9-0. Ferrum's
women will also take on Shenandoah April 10. The USA South
doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. in Ferrum.
