Three Student-Athletes Earn USA South Honors

FERRUM, VA – 
Three Ferrum College student-athletes have earned Player of the Week honors from the USA South Athletic Conference for their part in Ferrum baseball and golf action last week.


Kent Doughty

Senior Kent Doughty (Mount Sidney, Va./Fort Defiance) has been named Golfer of the Week.  Doughty closed out the Lynchburg Invitational held March 14 at London Downs Golf Course with a 72, tying for first place.  He then won the first hole of the playoff to claim medalist honors.  It was the first medalist honor for a Ferrum golfer since the fall of 2000.  Also nominated this week for the award were Adam Horton of Methodist and Rocky Manning of Greensboro.

Sophomore third baseman Brett Thomas (Danville, Va./George Washington) has been named Baseball Player of the Week.  Thomas batted .500 last week over four games, with two doubles, and triple, and two home runs.  He scored seven runs, drove in four, and had an impressive 1.125 slugging percentage in 16 at-bats and 17 plate appearances.  Also nominated for the award were Ben Kaplan of Methodist College and Jason Moody of Christopher Newport University.

Freshman Jesse Bowles (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) has been named Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week.  Bowles earned a 7-0 win over Methodist March 19th on the road, scattering three hits over nine innings, striking out 10 batters, and allowing no runs and no walks.  Also nominated for the award were Mike Cosby of Christopher Newport; Andrew Keever of Greensboro College, Nick Sborz of Shenandoah University, and Eric Autry of Methodist.
