Basketball Players Earn All-Conference
Toland, Johnson Earn Major Awards

Ferrum , Va.
– Ferrum College had four players named to the 2005 USA South All-Conference men's and women's basketball teams.  Leading the way for the Panther hoop squads were senior Tara Toland (North, S.C./North), who was named Women's Player of the Year, and freshman Kenny Johnson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls), who was named Men's Rookie of the Year.

Toland is leading the nation in assists this season with her 7.9 per game average.  She averages 18.7 points and 3.7 steals per game for Ferrum, which finished second in the USA South regular season standings.

Toland currently has 1,484 career points, and needs just 13 points to tie and 14 points to break the College's career scoring mark. This is the third consecutive season in which the career scoring mark has been broken.  Tanisha Durham '04, set the record last season with 1,497 career points from 2001-04.  Tina McBride '03 set the record the previous season with 1,384 career points from 2000-03.

Johnson is leading the Ferrum men in scoring and assists this season, averaging 15.6 points and 6.5 assists per game.  He earned a spot on the All-Conference second team.  Johnson earned three USA South Rookie of the Week awards this year.

Sophomore Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) joins Toland on the All-Conference first team.  She is averaging a double-double in scoring in rebounding, with 14.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.  Alzime was the USA South Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year last season.

Senior Angie VonWergers (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley College) has been named to the All-Conference honorable mention team.  VonWergers is averaging 11.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game this season.

The Ferrum women advanced to the USA South Tournament semifinals with a 64-59 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College last night at home.  Ferrum, seeded #2, will face #6 Methodist College Friday night at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia.  The Monarchs upset #3 Christopher Newport last night, 60-51, at CNU.

The Panther men play Friday in the USA South Tournament quarterfinals.  Ferrum is seeded #6 and will face #3 Averett University at 5 p.m. Friday.  The tournament is being hosted by Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
