Ferrum Women Hold Off Bishops in USA South Tourney
Panthers Win 64-59 in USA South Quarterfinal

– The Ferrum College women's basketball team was able to hold off North Carolina Wesleyan College with a 64-59 win in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

Ferrum (15-11) was led by sophomore Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge), who scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, including 10 offensive.  Senior Tara Toland (North, S.C./North) added 13 points and had eight assists for the Panthers in the victory. 

In the first half, both the Panthers (#2 seed) and the Bishops (#7 seed) got off to a slow start, with neither team shooting over 27 percent in the period.  N.C. Wesleyan led 24-23 at halftime, only to see Ferrum score the first eight points of the second half.  The Bishops battled back to tie the score at 34-34 with 13 minutes left to play.  The Panthers continued to take advantage of their foul shoots, hitting 17 of 20 from the line for the win.

N.C. Wesleyan was led by Trenea Turner, who had 19 points.  Kendra Brewer added 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Kimberly High also had 15 points in the loss.  The Bishops close out the 2004-05 season at 7-18 overall.

The Panthers advance to the USA South semifinals, where they will face #6 Methodist College Friday night in Newport News.  The Monarchs upset #3 Christopher Newport University 60-51 on the road tonight.  In the other semifinal, #1 Greensboro College will face #4 Peace College Friday evening.  Greensboro defeated #8 Shenandoah University 63-59, while Peace defeated Averett University 68-61 to advance.
