Ferrum Splits Basketball Doubleheader at
Chowan
Women Win 85-78, Men Fall 89-76
MURFREESBORO, N.C.
– Ferrum's College's women erased a 14-point deficit to claim an
85-78 non-conference basketball win over Chowan College. In
the nightcap, the Ferrum men fell to the Braves, 89-76.

Ferrum (14-11) was led by senior
Tara Toland
(North, S.C./North), who continued her sterling play of late,
scoring 30 points and dishing out seven assists. Toland
scored 31 points in a road win over North Carolina Wesleyan
College yesterday.
Sophomore
Aline
Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) added 22 points for Ferrum,
which trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half and was
down 46-41 at halftime.
Senior
Angie
VonWergers (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley College) contributed 12
points and seven rebounds in the win.
Chowan (18-7) got 15 points and 12 rebounds from Keyon Sellers,
while Kara Jackson had 15 points and 10 assists. The Braves
won the battle of the boards 47-35.
With the win, Ferrum closes out regular season action with a 5-0
run. Coach Donna Doonan's team earned a runner-up finish in
the USA South Athletic Conference regular season standings and
will now host a USA South Tournament quarterfinal game against
North Carolina Wesleyan Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m.

In the men's game,
freshman
Kenny Johnson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) knocked down 20
points and had 11 assists in the loss. Sophomores
Ken Holley
(Winston-Salem, N.C./No. Forsyth) and Keith Harris
(Ringgold, Va./Dan River) had 13 points each, while sophomore
Rob Fuller (Timberlake, N.C./Person County) and freshman
Rafael
Holland (Palmyra, Va./Fork Union) had 10 each.
Chowan (14-11) was led by Montino Williams' 30 points.
Roland Brown added 20 points and 12 rebounds. Ferrum led
40-37 at halftime.
Ferrum (7-18) finished sixth in the USA South regular season
standings and will face #3 seed Averett University Feb. 24 at 5
p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Tournament.
The entire tournament will be hosted by Greensboro College in
Greensboro, North Carolina.
