Ferrum Women Top CNU
Panther Ladies Win 93-77, Men Fall 83-79 to Captains

, Va.  – Ferrum College and Christopher Newport University split today's USA South Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader, with the Panther women winning 93-77 and CNU's men winning 83-79.

Ferrum (11-11, 9-3 USA South) was led in scoring by senior Tara Toland (North, S.C./North), who had 25 points, and senior Angie VonWergers (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley College), who had 20 points and 16 rebounds.  VonWergers was a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line.

Freshman Brittany Kellam (
Collinsville, Va./Magna Vista) added 17 points, shooting 50 percent from behind the three-point arc.  Senior Amber Triplett (Bassett, Va./Bassett) had 16 points.  Sophomore Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) had 10 rebounds to go with six points.

Christopher Newport (9-13, 6-5) was led by Samantha Davis' 19 points.  Jessica Hutt had 18 points, Candace Bryant had 15 and 15 rebounds, and Michele Russell had 14.  Ferrum led 53-31 at halftime, and set a new school record for team three-point baskets made with 13.

In the men's game, the Panthers had six players score in double figures, led by freshman Rafael Holland (Palmyra, Va./FUMA), who had 15 points.  Sophomore Keith Harris (Ringgold, Va./Dan River), sophomore Ken Holley (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) added 14 points, freshman Jon Godsey (Gladys, Va./William Campbell), sophomore had 12, sophomore Rob Fuller (Timberlake, N.C./Person Co.) had 12, and freshman Kenny Johnson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) had 11 points and dished out 14 assists.
 
Christopher Newport (16-7, 6-4) was led in scoring by Brandon Brooks, who had a game-high 17 points.  Steven Murrer had 16 points, Jeremy Romeo had 15, and Korey Lewis had 12.  Ferrum (6-17, 3-8) led 45-40 at halftime.

Ferrum's women will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 16, when they host USA South opponent Averett University at 7 p.m.  Both teams will be on the road next weekend, Feb. 19-20, Saturday at North Carolina Wesleyan College and Sunday at Chowan College.  Both doubleheaders will see the women tip off at 2 p.m., with the men to follow at 4 p.m.
