Ferrum to Open 2005 Baseball Campaign
Panthers Play at Piedmont Feb. 12-13
Ferrum, Va.
– The Ferrum College baseball team will open its 2005 season on
Saturday and Sunday, February 12-13, at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia.
Ferrum is coming off a 26-11 season in which it won the USA South
Athletic Conference regular season baseball title. It was Ferrum's third
straight season in which it won or shared the USA South (formerly
the Dixie Conference) baseball crown. Overall Ferrum has won
seven USA South baseball titles (1990, 1992, 1993, 1999, 2002,
2003, 2004).
The Panthers are led by Head Coach Abe Naff, now in his 21st
season at the helm of the Ferrum baseball program. Naff owns
a 560-194-1 career coaching record (.742), and is ranked #4 among
the NCAA Division III active winningest baseball coaches.
Seventh year Assistant Coach Darren Hodges and second-year
Assistant Coach Barry Shelton return to the Panthers baseball
coaching staff.
Piedmont finished 20-27 last season, including a 5-7 mark in the
Great South Athletic Conference regular season standings.
The Lions won the Great South post-season tournament.
This weekend's games at Piedmont are only the second and third time
Ferrum and Piedmont have met on the baseball field. The
Panthers hold a 1-0 series advantage, courtesy of a 6-3 win on
March 9, 2004 in Ferrum. Both Saturday's and Sunday's
nine-inning games will begin at 1 p.m.
