NC Wesleyan Upsets Ferrum in Two Overtimes

Bishops Come Back from 14-Point Deficit

Ferrum, Va. – Ferrum College squandered a 21-7 lead in this afternoon's USA South Athletic Conference football game against North Carolina Wesleyan College, eventually losing to the Battling Bishops 30-27 in do
uble overtime.

N.C. Wesleyan trailed 21-7 at halftime, but held the Panthers scoreless in the second half, while scoring 14 points to send the game into overtime.  Josh Dunigan started things off three plays into the third quarter, when he tossed a 58-yard bomb to Norman Hunter to cut the lead to 21-14.

The defenses took over for the next quarter and a half before N.C. Wesleyan's Javon Williams dove in from two yards out with 7:25 remaining in the game.  Brian Vaughn's PAT knotted the score at 21-21.  The Panthers then drove the ball to the NCW 17, but a missed field goal with 1:27 left to play, sending the game into OT.

Ferrum won the toss in OT and elected top play defense.  Three Wesleyan plays netted just four yards before Vaughn drilled a field goal from 38 yards out to give the Bishops a 24-21 lead.  Ferrum responded with a  26-yard Matt Novak field goal to tie the game again at 24-24.  In the second OT, Ferrum was on offense first and Novak connected again, this time on a 31-yarder to give Coach Dave Davis' team a 27-24 lead.

After the Panther field goal, backup QB Cedric Townsend, who came on when Dunigan went down with in injured knee in the fourth quarter, found Williams open in the flat.  Williams did the rest, picking his way through the Panther secondary for the winning score.

For the game, Ferrum totaled 312 yards on offense to N.C. Wesleyan's 242, and picked up 20 first downs to Wesleyan's 12.  Williams led Wesleyan with 87 yards rushing and two TDs on 27 carries, and added 23 yards and the winning TD on two receptions.  For the game, Williams had 150 all-purpose yards.  Dunigan went 8-25 passing for 152 yards and a score.  Townsend was 2-6 for 32 yards and a TD.

Dustin Hamoy had 65 yards on 12 rushes for Ferrum, while Terrell Mulford  had 55 yards and a pair of TDs on 12 carries.  Matt Spangler was 8-20 for 65 yards with two interceptions.

Defensively, the Bishops were led by Jamar Dials, who had had 18 tackles, an interception, and a pass breakup.  Justin Augustin had eight tackles, including four for loss and a pair of sacks for 13 yards.  Ferrum was led by Craig Ford with nine tackles and Darren Venable with eight.

N.C. Wesleyan (4-4, 3-3 USA South) is competing in its first season of collegiate football.  Ferrum (4-5, 1-4) will close out the 2004 campaign next Saturday when it travels to Newport News to face USA South opponent Christopher Newport University.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum College Sports Information Office at (540) 365-4306.
