Venable a Three-Time Player of the Year in USA South

Senior DB Named Defensive Player of the Year

Ferrum, Va. – Ferrum College senior defensive back Darren Venable (Covington, Va./Covington) was named the USA South Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive season.

Joining Venable on the all-conference first team were tight end Chris Silk (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry), offensive lineman George Masten (Sunrise, Fla./Plantation), and Philip Monk (Swords Creek, Va./Honaker). Running back Terrell Mulford (North Garden, Va./Charlottesville) was a second team selection.

Venable closed out the season leading the Panthers defense with 97 tackles and four sacks.  He also recorded three interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, and blocked a kick. 

Venable was a named to the preseason All-American team by the Don Hanson Football Gazette. He is a two time All-American with the Football Gazette and also earned AA honors with the College Sports Information Directors last season.  Venable should be a strong candidate for All-American honors this season again.
