Ferrum Picks Up 38-17 Gridiron Win Over Greensboro

Panthers Score Four TDs in Third Quarter in USA South Win

Ferrum, Va. – Ferrum College's football team overcame a 17-10 halftime deficit by scoring four touchdowns in the third quarter to earn a USA South Athletic Conference 38-17 win over Greensboro College during the Pride's Homecoming Weekend.

Ferrum got on the board quickly, driving 62 yards on the game's first possession and scoring on a four-yard run by FB Vic Davidson (Winston-Salem, N.C./N. Forsyth) at the 11:45 mark.  Greensboro responded with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Justin Roberson to Tyrelle Lee with 4:51 to go in the first quarter.  On Ferrum's next possession, the Panthers had a punt blocked with Greensboro recovering and returning it to the Ferrum three yard line.  Two plays later, Quentin Caldwell cashed in from two yards out to the Pride on top 14-7 with 2:31 left in he first.

Ferrum cut the deficit to 17-10 with a PK Matt Novak (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) 26-yard field goal at the 9:55 mark of the second quarter.  Greensboro PK Chris Palme then split the uprights from 44 yards out to give Greensboro a 17-10 halftime lead.

Ferrum took control of the game in the third quarter, scoring four TDs in less than five minutes.  After allowing the Pride to move the ball from the Greensboro five all the way to the Ferrum 26, the Panther defense held on 4th-and-12 and took over on downs.  Three plays later, backup QB Matt Spangler (Roanoke, Va./Northside) hit WR Carlton Hughes (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) with a 54-yard scoring strike to tie the game 17-17 at 6:47 of the third.  On Greensboro's next possession, the Ferrum defense held again and forced a punt.  Seven plays later, RB Terrell Mulford (North Garden, Va./Charlottesville) barreled in from five yards out, capping a 67-yard drive at 2:36 of the third.

Things just got worse for the Pride.  On the second play from the ensuring drive, Ferrum DB Darren Venable (Covington, Va./Covington) picked off an errant Roberson pass and returned it 22 yards for a score at the 1:44 mark of the third.  The Pride then fumbled the next kickoff, which Ferrum recovered at the Greensboro 22 yard line.  Pitts then hit TE Chris Silk (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) with a 22-yard pass for the fourth TD of the third quarter, with just 1:29 left.

Mulford closed the game with 11 rushed for 86 yards and a score for Ferrum.  Starting QB Jermaine Pitts (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) was 4-11 passing for 76 yards and a TD, with one interception.  Hughes had a pair of receptions for 70 yards and a score, and Silk made one reception for 22 yards and a score.  DB Craig Ford (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) led the Panther defense with seven tackles and a sack.  Venable had six tackles, a sack and the interception return for a TD.

Caldwell had 17 carries for 72 yards rushing and a score for the Pride.  Roberson was 9-20 for 100 yards and a TD, with two interceptions.  DB Mantron Davis led the Greensboro defense with nine tackles and two pass breakups.
