Venable Named USA South Defensive Player of the Week
Senior DB has 20 Tackles in Win Over Guilford
Ferrum, Va. – Senior
defensive back Darren
Venable (Covington, Va./Covington) has been named Defensive
Player of the Week by the USA South Athletic Conference for his
play in last Saturday's win over Guilford College.
Venable had six solo tackled and 14 assisted tackles to help
Ferrum defeat Guilford 21-16 during Hall of Fame and Homecoming
Weekend '04. Venable's numbers include a pair of tackles
for loss and a quarterback sack.
Venable is a two-time All-American for Ferrum. If he makes
All-America again this season, he will become only the second
Ferrum student-athlete to earn three All-America honors.
The only other Panther is former baseball standout Keith Mayhew,
who earned AA honors in 1993, 1994, and 1995.
Venable was named he USA South Defensive Player of the Year in
2002 and 2003. He is Ferrum's first-ever two-time Player
of the year in football and only the second ever Ferrum
student-athlete to win two Player of the Year awards.
Pitcher Shelley Bowles earned Player of the Year honors in the
Dixie Conference in 1993 and 1994.
Ferrum (3-3, 0-2 USA South) will face Methodist College this
Saturday, Oct. 16, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in a key USA
South match-up. The Monarchs are 4-0 overall and 2-0 in
