Gibson '01 Named Martinsville Mustangs General Manager
Ferrum Graduate to Lead Off-Field Operations
Ferrum, Va.
– Ferrum College graduate Doug Gibson '01 has been named General
Manager of the
Martinsville Mustangs, the city of Martinsville's (VA) new
baseball franchise. Gibson graduated from Ferrum in 2001
with a degree in recreation & leisure. He begins work with
the Mustangs today.
"I am pleased to name Doug Gibson as general manager of the
Martinsville Mustangs,” said Matt Hankins, Martinsville’s
communications manager. “We were looking for candidates with a
good background in starting up successful teams, and Mr. Gibson
has solid experience leading a successful start-up. He has strong
ties to the Martinsville area and his obvious enthusiasm will make
the Mustangs a strong entry in the Coastal Plain League.”
We were fortunate to have several applicants with current or past
general managerial experience, and I believe the team has a
general manager who will establish a solid foundation for success
this year and in the future,” Hankins said.
His principal duties with the Mustangs include setting ticket
rates and managing ticket sales, promotions and game day
sponsorships, selling advertising, setting up special events,
overseeing concessions and ABC licensure, hiring part-time
game-day personnel, coordinating player housing with host
families, sports media relations, representing the team at area
events and setting up additional events at Hooker Field outside of
baseball season.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for me, and I believe Mustangs
fans are going to enjoy the best collegiate summer baseball
available through the CPL,” said Gibson. “We are going to field a
quality team and give fans a great sports entertainment experience
at a reasonable price.”
Gibson, the team’s second hire after head coach Rob Watt, will
report to Hankins and be based out of the Hooker Field
administrative office. The city’s Leisure Services Department
under administrator Tony Rinaldi will be responsible for
maintaining Hooker Field’s facilities and playing surface.
Gibson previously served as general manager of the Covington
Lumberjacks, Lumberjacks in the Shenandoah Valley League. He
managed the Lumberjacks since the team's inception in 2001 and
subsequent sale.
The Martinsville Mustangs are members of the 14-team
Coastal Plains League,
a summer college baseball league which began play in 1997.
The Coastal Plains League offers a premier developmental
environment for college players hoping to hone their skills and
display their talents during the summer. In 1999, the CPL received
official certification from the NCAA and Major League Baseball.
Playing exclusively in the Carolinas and Virginia, the league
utilizes several former minor league stadiums as well as
first-class municipal facilities in the following cities:
Asheboro, Edenton, Fayetteville, Florence (SC), Gastonia, Hampton
(VA), Manteo (Outer Banks), New Bern, Petersburg (VA),
Spartanburg, Thomasville, Wilmington, and Wilson. Several other
cities are under consideration as future expansion sites.-
