Petrel Named Assistant Softball Coach at Ferrum

Ferrum
, Va.  – Director of Athletics Abe Naff has announced the hiring of Jim Petrel as Assistant Softball Coach at Ferrum College.

Petrel joins the Ferrum softball coaching staff and will work with 15th-year Head Coach Vickie Van Kleeck.  He previously served three years as Assistant Softball Coach at Bethany College in West Virginia.

The softball team qualified for the NCAA playoffs all three years during Petrel's tenure at Bethany, advancing to the Division III College Softball World Series in 2002.  Petrel earned his bachelor’s degree in 2004 from Bethany, where he played two years for the baseball team and a year with the football team.  Petrel is a native of Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.

Petrel joins a Ferrum program that returns the majority of its 28-15-1 team from a year ago.  The Panthers finished third in the USA South Athletic Conference regular season standings and advanced to the championship game of the 2004 USA South Tournament.  Ferrum has made one trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs, in 2002 after winning the USA South (then Dixie Conference) Tournament.

The Panthers open the season with a Spring Break road trip, where they will participate in the 2005 University of West Florida Softball Spring Fling Feb. 27 through Mar. 4 in Pensacola, Florida.  Ferrum will play nine games in a five-day stretch during the trip, including a pair of games at Div. III powerhouse Emory University Mar. 5 in Atlanta following the UWF Spring Fling.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum College Sports Information Office at (540) 365-4306.
