Ferrum Sweeps Greensboro
in Hoop Doubleheader
Women Blow Out Pride 83-47, Men Win 66-64

Ferrum, Va.  – Ferrum College swept a USA South Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader against Greensboro College at home this evening, with the women winning 83-47 and the men winning in a thriller 66-64.

Senior Tara Toland (North, S.C./North) led the Panther women with 19 points, eight assists, eight rebounds and six steals.  Toland went 7-8 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line.  She is averaging 17.2 points per game though Ferrum's first 13 games this season.

Sophomore Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) and freshman Brittany Kellam (Collinsville, Va./Magna Vista) also made strong contributions in the game.  Alzime continued her solid play this season by scoring 16 points and grabbing six rebounds.  Kellam posted 18 points.  Kellam has scored in double digits in the last three games, all conference wins for the Panthers.  The Pride were led by Sirlena Moore's 10 points, and Jamie Funk and DaVenna Brown, who had eight points apiece.

Ferrum took a 43-23 lead into the locker room, and continued its dominating play in the second half, outscoring the Pride 40-24.  Ferrum improves to 5-8 overall with the win, and remains perfect in the USA South at 4-0.  Greensboro (8-5, 4-1 USA South) suffered its first conference loss this season.
 
In the men's game, the Panthers were led by freshman Kenny Johnson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls), who scored 20 points and dished out nine assists.  Ferrum also got help from sophomore Ken Holley (Winston-Salem, N.C./N. Forsyth), who had 12 points and seven  rebounds.  Sophomore Ed Robinson (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox County) chipped in 11 points for the Panthers.  Greensboro's Rodney Blackstock led all scorers with 21 points.

The Panthers trailed 35-27 at halftime, and saw the Pride increase its lead to as much as 11 points in the second half before coming back to take the lead with under three minutes to play.  The Panthers improve to 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the USA South.  Greensboro falls to 4-11 overall, 0-3 in USA South play.

The Ferrum men and women will be back in action Jan. 22 at Christopher Newport University.  The USA South doubleheader is set to begin at 2 p.m. with the women's game, and the men to follow at 4 p.m.  Both teams will return to action Jan. 26 at Shenandoah, another USA South match-up.  The women's and men's games are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
