Baker Named Women's Tennis Coach at Ferrum

Ferrum, Va.  – Director of Athletics Abe Naff has announced the hiring of Rod Baker as Women's Tennis Head Coach, effective immediately.  Baker currently serves as Assistant Men's Soccer Coach at Ferrum, having completed his first season on the bench during the fall of 2004.

Baker played tennis four years at Ferrum.  His senior year in 2003, he went 16-7 in singles and 12-10 in doubles for a 28-17 overall record.  Ferrum finished 15-3 that season.

Baker currently holds school records for career matches played (160), career singles wins (47), and career overall wins (82).  He also played soccer four years at Ferrum, starting in goal his last three seasons. He was named to the USA South Athletic Conference's Academic All-Conference team in the spring of 2003.

The women's tennis team finished 2-7 overall last season, placing fifth in the USA South Athletic Conference regular season standings and tying for sixth at the USA South Tournament.  The Panthers are 0-1 thus far this season.  Baker will make his tennis coaching debut February 26 when Ferrum returns to action with its USA South opener against North Carolina Wesleyan College.  The match will take place in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, at 12 p.m.

Baker received his bachelor's degree in art from Ferrum in 2003. A native of Maumee, Ohio, Baker prepped at Maumee High School.
