Softball Team Wins Silver Division at East Coast Classic
Panthers Go 4-1 in Two-Day Tournament
 
Ferrum, Va. -- Ferrum College went 4-1 at this weekend's East Coast Classic, hosted by Roanoke College March 19-20 at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.  Ferrum finished as champions in the Silver Division.
 
The Panthers opened the tournament on March 19 with a 5-0 win over Plattsburgh State University and a 2-1 win over Marietta College, before losing 2-1 to Salisbury University in eight innings.  Salisbury is currently the #1-ranked team in the NCAA Division III ranks.  Ferrum then closed out the tournament on March 20 with a 7-5 win over McDaniel College and a 4-1 win over Bethany College.

Against Plattsburgh State yesterday, freshman Kim Cox (Gladys, Va./Wm. Campbell) went 3-4 with an RBI and was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and striking out six.  Sophomore Wendy Hunt (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) and sophomore Jenny Perdue (Glade Hill, Va./Franklin County) each went 2-4.

Hunt and sophomore Trica Moore (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox County) went 2-3 against Marietta.  Junior Stacy Porter (Radford, Va./Radford) was the winning pitcher, allowing five hits and striking out four.  Perdue went 2-4 with a triple against Salisbury.

Moore, pictured above, had a pair of home runs against McDaniel in today's action, going 2-3 with five RBI.  Sophomore Kristina Wilhelm (Covington, Va./Alleghany) went 2-3 at the plate.  Porter was the winning pitcher, fanning eight batters.

Against Bethany, Cox was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run and striking out five.  Wilhelm, Porter, and junior Jami Reed (Danville, Va./Tunstall) each had a pair of base hits for the Panthers.
 
Ferrum is now 14-7 overall and remains unbeaten in the USA South Athletic Conference at 4-0.  The Panthers have won 12 of their last 13 games.
 
Coach Vickie Van Kleeck's team will be back in action on Saturday, March 27, when they play at Chowan College at 1:30 p.m. in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.  The Panthers return home the next day to face Peace College at 1 p.m.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum College Sports Information Office at (540) 365-4306.
