Ferrum Splits with Methodist in Baseball
- Panthers Fall 5-3, Then Rebound 19-2

- Ferrum, Va. -- Ferrum College split its USA
South Athletic Conference baseball with visiting Methodist College
this afternoon, losing the first game and winning the second.

In the first game, senior catcher Kevin
Griffin (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) had a two-run homer in the seventh
inning but it wasn't enough as the Monarchs pulled out a 5-3
win. Freshman first baseman Brett
Thomas (Danville, Va./George Washington) went 2-3 with a
double. Freshman Curtis
Taylor (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) absorbed the loss. He
pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (one
earned), walked one batter, and struck out 10.
In the nightcap, the Panthers raced out to an 8-0 lead after three
innings and never looked back in a 19-2 win. Senior outfielder
Brandon Hale (Coeburn,
Va./Coeburn) went
4-5 with a home run, three runs, and two RBI. Senior
outfielder Ricky
Peace (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) went 3-5 with a homer, four RBI,
and a run.

- Thomas went
3-6 with a homer, four RBI, and three runs. Thomas, pictured
above, went 5-9 in two games with a double, a home run, four RBI,
and three runs. Senior Carlos
Sanchez (Stanleytown, Va./Bassett) went the entire eight
innings, allowing just one hit while walking four and striking out
six. Ferrum had 20 hits in the game, compared to one hit for
Methodist.
Ferrum improves to 16-4 overall and is now 9-2 in the USA
South. Methodist improves to 14-7, 7-4 in USA South
action. The
two teams will square off again in a single 9-inning game tomorrow
