Hale's Grand Slam Ignites Panther Offense

Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College Baseball team completed the series sweep of USA South rival Chowan College with a thrilling 9-8 victory this afternoon.

Chowan jumped out to a 6-2 lead after four innings, but the Panthers rallied with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on for the win.  Senior right fielder Brandon Hale (Coeburn, Va./Coeburn) (pictured at right) tied the game with a grand slam, and senior center-fielder Ricky Peace (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) and sophomore third-baseman Donnie Sprouse (Madison Hts., Va./Amherst) added RBI singles to put Ferrum ahead 8-6 after five innings.  Chowan pulled to within one run in the top of the sixth inning, but freshman second-baseman Matt Gammon (Providence, N.C./Bartlett-Yancey) answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.  Chowan got one more run in the top of the ninth inning.

Senior pitcher Carlos Sanchez (Stanleytown, Va./Bassett) went six innings allowing eight hits and seven runs to pick up the win and improve to 5-0 on the season.  Senior Thomas Meeks (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) worked the last three innings in relief allowing one run on two hits to pick up his second save of the year.
