Panthers Nab Six Player of the Week Awards
Ferrum Sweeps League's Weekly Baseball Awards
 
Ferrum, Va. -- The USA South Athletic Conference honored Six Ferrum College student-athletes this week for their performances in last week's contests.  Ferrum earned all four of the league's baseball awards, while a pair of basketball players grabbed Rookie of the Week honors.

Senior designated hitter Thomas Meeks (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) was named Baseball Player of the Week after going 4-6 for a .667 batting average in three games last week.  Meeks, a second-team All-American last year, had a double, two home runs, and eight RBI.  Meeks walked four times and was beaned twice.

Sophomore Jesse Bowles (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) was named Baseball Pitcher of the Week.  Bowles scattered three hits over five innings, allowed one unearned run, walked one and struck out seven in a Ferrum's 22-1 win over Emory & Henry College on Feb. 22.

Freshman third baseman Donnie Sprouse (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County) was named Baseball Rookie of the Week after batting .800 last week.  Sprouse went 8-10 with three doubles, eight RBI, and a walk.  

Freshman Curtis Taylor (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) was named Rookie Pitcher of the Week after a fine performance in Ferrum's 11-0 win over Pikeville College on Feb. 21.  Taylor allowed just two hits and no runs, walked one and fanned six to run his record to 2-0 on the mound.

Freshman Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) was named Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week after averaging 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds to help Ferrum go 2-1 last week.

Freshman Kendrick Holley (Winston-Salem, N.C./No. Forsyth) was named Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week after helping the Panthers go1-2 last week and averaging 13.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

The Ferrum baseball team is off to a 5-0 start this season.  The Panthers will be back in action Mar. 3, when they host Lynchburg College at 3 p.m.  The women's basketball team lost to Greensboro College 71-65 in the opening round of the USA South Tournament Feb. 26 and closed its season at 15-11.  The men's basketball team lost to Shenandoah University 80-72 in overtime in the first round of the USA South Tournament, capping a 9-17 season.  For more information,
