Ferrum Men Defeat Southern Virginia
Panthers Outscore Knights 24-17 Down the Stretch
 
Ferrum, Va. -- Ferrum College got 13 points from sophomore Doug Griffy (Woodstock, Va./Central Woodstock) as the Panthers took home a 75-68 win over visiting Southern Virginia University in non-conference men's basketball action.

Griffy shot 5-7 from the floor and had five rebounds, four steals and a block to lead Ferrum (3-1).  Sophomore Chris Smith (Roanoke, Va./Northside), pictured above, had 11 points.
 
Freshman Kirk Melvin (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) had 10 points, while senior Kevin Aigbe (Nashville, Tenn./Volunteer State CC) had seven points, seven rebounds, and went 7-8 at the line. 
 
With the score tied 51-51 at the 10:25 mark of the second, Aigbe hit a pair of free throws to put Ferrum up 53-51.  The Panthers never trailed from there, outscoring the Knights 24-17 for the win.
 
Brandon Homer led Southern Virginia with 16 points on 7-10 shooting.  David Tarwater chimed in with 13 points in the loss.  For the game, Southern Virginia shot 44 percent from the floor to Ferrum's 39 percent.  The Panthers out-rebounded the Knights 39-34.  Southern Virginia (4-6) led by three at halftime, 35-32.

Ferrum will be back in action this weekend when it plays in the Salisbury University Tournament Dec. 5-6.  Coach Ed Wills' team will face the Apprentice School Friday at 3 p.m.  The consolation and championship games are set for 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, respectively.  For more information, please contact the sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
