Panthers Lose Home-Opener
Toland Leads Ferrum with 16 Points
 
Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College women's basketball team lost their home-opener this evening to Alvernia College, 76-88, in the Ferrum Tip-Off Tournament.
 
Ferrum (0-1) was led by junior guard Tara Toland (North, S.C./North), who had a game-high 16 points on 7-16 shooting from the floor.  Freshman guard Aline Alzime (Leesburg, Va./Stonebridge) added 15 points, while senior forward Tanisha Durham (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) had 14 points.
 
Junior forward Angela Vonwergers (Albany, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) picked up 10 points in the first game at Ferrum, while junior guard Amber Triplett (Bassett, Va./Bassett) drilled three treys tonight, scoring 14 points.  Senior center Shermika Harris (Martinsville, Va./Laurel Park) dominated the boards with a game-high 12 rebounds, including 10 defensive.

Leading the way for Alvernia (1-0) was Erin McIntyre with 20 points.  Kacie Androsko and Kristin McCloskey had 12 points each.  Mandy Reinhart added 11 points for Alvernia, ranked #20 in the nation by Women's Division III News.

In the second game of the night, Lynchburg College defeated Averett University, 73-67.  The Hornets were led by Abbie Pyzik, who had 15 points on 6-10 shooting, six rebounds, and six assists.  Caroline Cubbage had 13 points, while Shannon Newton and Carolina Wesley had 11 each.  Averett (0-1) was led by Dawn Sheets, who had 17 points and seven rebounds.  Lakisha Jones had 12 points for the Cougars.
